Wine Farms

Franschhoek only 50 minutes from St James/Kalk Bay

On Saturday we decided to spend the sunny winter's day in Franschhoek. It is an easy drive from Kalk Bay, along the coast with the waves breaking next to the road. Franschhoek is a town in South Africa’s Western Cape with centuries-old vineyards and Cape Dutch architecture.  57 Huguenot families settled in the valley in the 16th century.  Many had skills, associated with the wine industry. Trails...

Oak Valley Mountain Bike Ride

One of the most spectacular rides I've done was the day the Foresters' cycle group met at 8 am to cycle the Oak Valley track. This beautiful ride on the Oak Valley Estate, a wine farm near Elgin, is only 75 minutes' drive from Kalk Bay. There are 3 grades of track and most of us did the middle one which was 24 kms through wonderful oak trees, then open fields and vineyards. We started on a single,...

Silvermine dam, Tokai forest is 20 minutes drive from Kalk Bay

Silvermine dam and Tokai forest is 20 minutes drive from Kalk Bay and St James. We drove up the mountain and parked a car. Then we found the top contour jeep track and cycled slowly down the mountain. At the beginning we had wonderful views over the Constantia wine farms to False Bay.      We cycled through the forest to the Porter school and stopped at the Impala Jet.  Then cycled on through the...

Constantia Berg

Mountain bike ride in Constantia

One of my favourite activities close to Kalk Bay is my weekly mountain bike ride with the Tuesday Tribe in the Constantia valley, between 5 wine farms, oak trees and the Tokai forest. There are green belts with trails between the beautiful houses. My daughter from London enjoys the rides too. The trees are being removed to allow the indigenous fynbos to grow. There are hundreds of houses in this...

Cycling the Constantia Valley Winelands

Another perfect summer's day dawned.  With the sun rising over False Bay, I loaded my bike onto the car to take a 10 minute drive to meet my friends in Constantia Valley. We decided at 7 am to cycle through the wine farms.  Out first call was at Groot Constantia (Great Constantia). Beautiful and of historical interest, the farm is introduced in the Our Heritage section of the website as follows: "The...

Cycling in Tulbagh valley

Last weekend, Jon and I drove in the Volvo to Montpellier to stay in a simple cottage in the vineyard. It was so pretty with the autumn coloured red and gold vines in front of the cottage and surrounded by mountains. We dined on my babotie, yellow rice and salad in front of the log fire with the dogs curled up at our feet. We slept in a brass and iron bed. After a delicious English breakfast at...

Crankhandle Club organised the Swartland rally 19 April 2008

During the week Jon and I realised that the MGB could not be ready in time for the Swartland rally. Jon prepared the 1971 Jaguar which was so comfortable and warm in the rain. Schuppa, the Border Collie, easily fitted on to the back seat. In pouring rain, we met the Crankers at Milnerton Paddling club on the beach. There were 32 cars which included Austins, Jags, Rolls Royces, Mercede Benzs, MGs,...
