On a cold winters morning in St James, Yvonne and I drove at 6.15 to Lagoon Beach hotel to meet our Recycler friends. The Lagoon Beach hotel is on Table Bay. http://www.lagoonbeachhotel.co.za/ It was still dark when we unloaded the bikes. 26 Recyclists met us. We cycled on a safe cycle path to Blauwberg and some […]
On Saturday we decided to spend the sunny winter’s day in Franschhoek. It is an easy drive from Kalk Bay, along the coast with the waves breaking next to the road. Franschhoek is a town in South Africa’s Western Cape with centuries-old vineyards and Cape Dutch architecture. 57 Huguenot families settled in the valley in the […]
Good place to take visitors on a rainy day – L’Omarins wine farm. http://www.fmm.co.za/ The cars are in 4 huge barns on a wine farm in Franschoek valley
It was a perfect sunny winter’s day in Kalk Bay. We went with Chad in his boat to see Seal Island. It was very exciting to see whales from the ocean on our way to Seal Island. There are hundreds of seals in and out of the water. Plenty of food for sharks. The […]
One of the most spectacular rides I’ve done was the day the Foresters’ cycle group met at 8 am to cycle the Oak Valley track. This beautiful ride on the Oak Valley Estate, a wine farm near Elgin, is only 75 minutes’ drive from Kalk Bay. There are 3 grades of track and most of […]
Silvermine dam and Tokai forest is 20 minutes drive from Kalk Bay and St James. We drove up the mountain and parked a car. Then we found the top contour jeep track and cycled slowly down the mountain. At the beginning we had wonderful views over the Constantia wine farms to False Bay. […]
Tulbagh is a village at the end of the road. We enjoyed a wonderful stay on a farm Schalkenbosch. We cycled into Tulbagh. At the Tulbagh Hotel we met the owner who gave us a map of cycle routes. We plan to return to look for more routes in the nature reserve near the station.
One of my favourite activities close to Kalk Bay is my weekly mountain bike ride with the Tuesday Tribe in the Constantia valley, between 5 wine farms, oak trees and the Tokai forest. There are green belts with trails between the beautiful houses. My daughter from London enjoys the rides too. The trees are being […]
On Sunday we cycled from the excellent Slanghoek Valley camp site towards Bains Kloof. Next to the camp site was a field with ponies.
On Saturday, at Hexpass station, 19 Recyclers boarded the Hex Pass Eco train which is pulled by a tractor on the railway line to travel up the mountain. The railway was purchased by farmer Stefaan Jordaan. We chugged up and up around bends and through tunnels to Tunnel Station. Here we disembarked to enjoy the panoramic view of […]
